Dear Visitor,
I’m Colin Clark. I founded Tribeswell in June of 2009 so that I could work with small businesses to ensure their marketing success. I am constantly amazed by the huge changes that technology is creating in our society. In my heart of hearts I know that there has never been more opportunity for small businesses to thrive.
I grew up on a farm a few miles outside Veedersburg, Indiana which is an extremely small town in western Indiana just a few miles from the Illinois border. It’s hard to quantify exactly how my rural upbringing has affected my approach to business, but I like to think that I’m more in touch with small business values because of where I’m from.
In 2001 I graduated high school and moved away to Bloomington, Indiana to attend Indiana University. I studied history, because that’s what most interested me, and really didn’t give much thought as to what I would do next. All I knew for sure was that I would go off into the business world and see what I could make happen.
In the summer of 2006 I got my first ‘real’ job going door to door selling business phone plans for AT&T and Credit Card Processing for Intuit. This gave me the opportunity to meet dozens of business owners on a daily basis. I worked all over the state of Indiana and all over Chicago. It was intense.
By the spring of 2007 I was exhausted by the long hours and stress that came as a result of so much door to door sales and decided to make a change. I found myself working at the Indianapolis branch of Triangle Fastener Corporation, a construction supply company based out of Pittsburgh, PA.
At Triangle Fastener I was responsible for managing warehouse inventory, purchasing, inside sales, outside sales, and even managing deliveries. We supplied building supplies for Lucas Oil Stadium, the new Indianapolis Airport, the Indianapolis Library, and loads of other high profile projects. It was an exciting time in Indianapolis to have so many high-profile building projects happening all at once.
In June of 2008 my good friend TJ Furman brought a new opportunity to my attention. He was working as the lone salesperson for Marketpath, an Indianapolis-based web development company. They needed another salesman, so I decided to shift industries once again.
At Marketpath my eyes were opened to the incredible power of the web. This was also the period where I first became involved with Rainmakers, the networking organization founded by Tony Scelzo.
At a Rainmaker event that summer, I met Kyle Lacy, who had just started his company Brandswag. He told me that he was in the business of helping businesses use Blogging, Facebook, LinkedIn, and a new tool called Twitter to market their products and services. I thought that was pretty cool so I dove right in.
I started blogging on the Marketpath website, engaging with networking contacts on LinkedIn, sharing ideas on Smaller Indiana, and I started a Twitter account. At that point I became pretty much obsessed and it didn’t make much sense to work at Marketpath any more.
In October 2008 I parted ways with the Marketpath crew and began doing freelance consulting with Mike Seidle and Paul Lorinczi who were startking a new company called Pro Blog Service. I helped develop systems and processes and helped promote clients using social media and blogging.
In January of 2009 Kyle Lacy offered me a job at Brandswag. I was thrilled! At Brandswag I would be responsible for sales, customer management, and marketing. Kyle and I also spent a lot of time theorizing on how to better use the web to help ensure client success.
My wife Laryn and I got a little tired of the hustle and bustle of Indianapolis. We decided to move back to Bloomington to be closer to her family. I decided that there would never be a better time to start my own company. I called it Tribeswell and the rest was history.
I love to meet with other business professionals, so if you have any interest in meeting me and telling me about your business, feel free to send me an email at Colin at Tribeswell dot com and I’d be happy to set something up.
Thank you sincerely,
Colin A. Clark
