Anyone remember that movie High Fidelity (one of my favorite flicks)?  There’s this scene where Catherine Zetta-Jones’ character is speaking with John Cusack’s character asking him if he’s going through one of those ‘What does it all mean?’ things.  I think we all feel that way every once in a while.

I’m kind of in that boat myself right now.  I think maybe that’s one of the reasons I blog.  Getting your thoughts down on paper (well getting your thoughts down on a computer screen at least) is very centering.  I’ve been a little lax lately as far as consistently putting up posts, and I think the reason might be tied up in my ‘What does it all mean?’ paradox.

There’s something about being 25 years old that makes you look back at everything you’ve done in your life.  You then look forward and realize that a quarter of your life is probably over (if you’re lucky) and that you’ve basically just started the actual adult, living, responsibility phase of living.

I remember being 20.  I was a wild young artistic type with dreams of grandeur and my whole life ahead of me.  My entire existence consisted of parties, friends, music, and wild ambition.  Now it consists of bills, responsibility, and just a little bit of worry.  I suppose this is the kind of thing that every person goes through at some point or another, and I sincerely hope that whoever finds this post doesn’t think it bad taste to share such personal sentiment.

This blog is intended to be an outlet for many things, but mostly it’s just about me and my ideas, aspirations, and shortcomings.  The most important part about social media is that it allows you bear your soul to the world while you’re at least a little bit protected from the harshness of the offline world.  The blogs that I enjoy the most are written by authors who have no fears about baring their souls to the world for better or worse.

I’ll be 26 in February, and there’s so much left to do.  I’ve got all the dreams and aspirations from the first half of my twenties and I’m sure that many more will emerge.  I look forward with a hesitant optimism and my worries subside a little with every keystroke.  Blogging is a beautiful thing like that sometimes.

I often find myself going through one of these ‘High Fidelity’ periods. Sometimes I can get pretty down on myself too, like it’s some kind of defect. But those of us in our mid-to-late twenties (I call it quarterlife) are really in a brave new world here. This is a distinct phase of life that didn’t exist until recently, and the whole point of it is to figure yourself out, so it’s natural that it feels like uncharted waters. Good luck.

Ray, thanks so much for the wonderful comment. I like the term ‘quarterlife’. It wouldn’t be so exciting if there weren’t ups and downs. I’ll have to check out ‘wakup naptown’ as well!

The compassionate me needs to say, “Hang in there, young guns! Twenties can be a confusing time of life, but as you persevere, you’ll naturally find your fit, and develop some perspective.”

Here comes my brutally honest reaction. Thinking that you’re in a “distinct phase of life that didn’t exist until recently” is bull. No force has created a new “phase of life.” It’s possible you find yourself in unfamiliar territory. That doesn’t mean it’s without precedent. If you’re going to be a writer/artist/Peace Corp. member, seriously, God bless you, but get started, and work hard. Figure out what you really want to do by doing it. Stick with it for long enough to truly evaluate it. Not 4 hours or even 48 hours.

If I misunderstood your intent,, Ray, I’m very sorry. Remember, the phrase, “conventional wisdom” still has the word “wisdom” in it. Now, for full disclosure, I am 47 and trying to figure out what I’m going to do for the next 20. So I’m back to the “compassionate me” – that’s why I can say that you’re not in a new “phase of life.” I’ve been through it before, and so has most every man. Going through it now. So, talk to older men you respect, and get their perspective. A longer-term view could be very beneficial to you fellows right now. Not necessarily about what you should do, but how you should feel about your station in life right now.

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.” –Goethe

Ha! Thanks Bill. This post always seems to attract great comments. I guess that’s what happens when you speak from the heart. I should do it more often. The good news… I’m finding meaning every day.

Good thoughts. Growing each day is awesome. Being an oldster, and considering you being in the midst of the 20′s, I promote to you a self examination of your potential, dreaming a little, and pursuing where you want to go. Do it now. You may change paths (several times) from where you plan to go, but that is life and growth. I find myself regretting not doing this at your age and it makes me a bit sad. But life is not regrets, so I get over myself. Dream large and enjoy what you do. That is why I like the quote from Goethe. Good day mate. Keep up the daily run. I will follow your journey. I want to learn more.
