Marketing decisions you need to make when you first start your business.
By Colin Clark
Since I recently started my business, I thought it would be cool to share some of the insights I’ve gained. There are some really basic marketing decisions you need to make to get your business started right.
- Pick a market – You’d really be surprised how many people skip this step. You really need to figure out what your ideal customer looks like. This doesn’t mean you can’t change your mind later on, but it’s extremely important to at least start out with a plan for who you will market your business to.
- Decide on a communication strategy – You’ve just started your business. No one has heard your story. How are you going to reach your market? For me this step involved lots of small business networking events and social media activity. Your strategy will probably vary from that, but it’s important to get your value proposition in front of as many suspects as possible as quickly as possible.
- Gather resources – From a marketing perspective, it is critical that you own your domain name (I would recommend choosing a business name based on dot com availability, but that’s just me). These days you also should consider your Twitter name, facebook fan page, friendfeed, tumblr… you get the idea. Register your name everywhere you can.
