If you’ve read a blog in the last few weeks you probably already knew that a new iPhone was on the horizon.  I’ve been hearing all the speculation and rumors about what the new superphone will be like.

Why am  I disappointed?  Well most of it has to do with the fact that Apple has already broken the mold with its previous iPhone offerings.  When you revolutionize the market 2 years in a row it becomes almost impossible to do it again.

With that said, I fully anticipate buying one later this summer, I’m just not going to freak out like last year.

With that said, I’m super excited about the new iPhone operating system.  They’ve made some amazing updates that solve the most common complaints that we’ve expressed in the last few years.

Here’s a few ways they could have impressed me a little more.

  1. They could have included a REDICULOUS camera (I’m talking 7+ mega-pixels with a decent flash).  Sure they made a nice update, but it’s probably still not juiced up enough to replace my digital point-and-shoot.  It would have been pretty impressive to be able to roll the new phone saying, “it’s a revolutionary new phone, touch-screen iPod, internet communication device, AND IT REPACES YOUR DIGITAL CAMERA!”  People would have totally freaked.
  2. Why didn’t they give it a different design?  Part of the fun of getting the iPhone 3G was seeing people with the old iPhone and saying “You’re still using that antiquated piece of crap?!” because you could instantly tell that the new phone was way better.  It wouldn’t have taken much.  Just a few little tweeks to give it some pizzazz.
  3. More memory.  If I’m going to be taking high quality videos with my iPhone I’m going to need more space than 16 gigs and I’m not willing to shell out the money for the 32 gig model.  I know I’m being picky here, but flash memory is ridiculously cheap and it would have made a huge statement to start out at 24 or 32 gigs and go up from there.
  4. I was hoping for significantly better battery performance.  I talk on my iPhone all day and I’d like to not have to plug it in as soon as I get home from work.  Actually I think I would take back my point about more memory in exchange for double the battery life.

Like I said, I’m a dork.  I’m going to get the new phone, because it is going to be totally sweet.  I’ve just come to expect a lot from the iPhone line and I think they could have delivered us one better.

Man, I am way more hyped than you are. Point A is a non-issue with me. If I want to take great digital pictures, I’ll use a digital camera, not my cell phone. I don’t want an optical zoom lens popping out of my cell phone. Point B? I like having the same design. I already know how it looks and feels in my hand. Point C? I already ordered the 32GB model :) Point D? 30 hours of iPod or 11 hours of video is pretty decent. Not sure how talk time affects this. I don’t talk on my iPhone as much as other people do.

    C’mon, get hyped!! :)

Pat, you’re crazy! You know I’m still hyped. All I’m saying is we they could have given us a little more and would have a bigger release.

Oh, by the way the talk time for the new phone is 5 hours (on 3g networks) which is the same as the 2nd generation phone.

I need 10 hours of talk time so I only have to charge my phone every other day (which is how often I had to charge my old phone).

You are right on with the new iPhone 3GS. I think they launched without a major overhaul because the market dictated it. Whether they were ready or not, they cannot afford to let the Palm Pre break into any of their action. When Palm announced the Pre with 8 Gig memory and no video camera, suddenly anyone contemplating moving off an iPhone was given every reason not to with the 3GS release. Yes, Apple could have killed it with a better battery and better camera/video abilities. But, let’s face it, they’re still leading the pack and have no reason to look behind them.

Yeah, that’s probably true. A complete overhaul wasn’t necessary at this point. It would have been cool though. Maybe next year.

I’ve been putting off the inevitable for a long time, but will probably buy the iPhone soon…

I had similar concerns and wanted: a) a great camera, b) expandable memory and c)long battery life. For what it is, though, it’s probably worth the price. Especially compared to my Verizon Paperweight… I mean Chocolate.

Werd, I must say that I can’t believe how much farther ahead of the curve the iPhone is when you compare it to some of the other phones on the market at a similar price point.

My mother just got a Samsung phone from Verizon (not sure of the model). It was over a hundred bucks and it was absolutely a joke compared to the iPhone.

The crazy thing is that the iPhone hasn’t changed all that much from when it came out. Still a very similar OS and feel. They definitely scored a homerun, which is why I think they should have stepped up to the plate and scored another one with the 3g S.
